Daryl Hall and John Oates have been many things on television: actors on 'Will & Grace,' spoofed on 'WWE Monday Night Raw,' guests on 'The Daily Show' and now the duo will serve as the voices of reason and temptation on an upcoming episodes of Fox's 'Family Guy' spinoff, 'The Cleveland Show.'"My son is a huge 'Family Guy' fan," Oates tells Spinner. "One day, Mike Henry, who is the voice of Cleveland, came back stage at one of the shows. He's a real music lover, a great guy and asked us if we would do a voiceover on 'Family Guy' and we did. Then when they spun off the show he asked us if we wanted to be almost like a recurring character. We thought it was amazing. We're an angel and devil on the shoulder of Cleveland, giving him good and bad advice."
Oates was mum on the subject of exactly who's the devil and who's the angel, but expect their first appearance on Sunday, Nov. 22. The duo are currently enjoying the fruits of their labor with the recently released career-spanning box set 'Do What You Want, Be Who You Are,' which features a slew of unreleased cuts, including several live takes that Oates found lying around on an old video cassette.
"I had a video tape from the early '70s from our first tour in Europe," he explains. "It was a show we did in London, in 1974 or 1975. It was very grainy and funky, but the music itself was great. The band happened to be on fire that night and we extracted the audio, remixed and remastered it and put six songs on the album from that."
By his own admission, Oates says that he probably wasn't aware of how good the band actually did sound that night until he heard the tapes. "At the time, it was our first really good band but I don't think I appreciated them in the day as much as I do now," he says. "It was a magic night and you don't always catch those nights on tour when you're recording live. Those moments just don't always come together."
'Do What You Want, Be Who You Are' is out now.
