Unknown English Band Gets Two Grammy Nominations?

Shakeys Brother? Heard of them? Neither has Spinner. But it appears many members of the Grammy Awards voting panel have. The five-piece pub band, from Burnley, Lancashire, usually play gigs to crowds of no more than 50, got together only a year ago and have yet to be signed. But they've picked up two nominations for the 2010 Grammy Awards, the Sun has reported, even though the nominations aren't officially announced until Dec. 2.
The band are to reported to be going head-to-head with the likes of Keane, Pink, Seal and Lily Allen at the awards, which take place in Los Angeles in January.
They were apparently nominated after friends sent their demo tape to US promoters Big Noise, who then passed them on to the voting panel of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, who pick the Grammy winners. And it seems it went down well with some in the 7,000-member panel -- the band is reportedly nominated in the Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group With Vocals categories.
These awards were won last year by Duffy and Coldplay.
While the Guardian doesn't think the band is anything special -- describing its music as a cross between Britpop journeymen the Bluetones, the Smiths and Arctic Monkeys -- it thinks the band could do well.
While still keeping their day jobs, the band has also recently been signed to Big Noise, which is a voting member of the academy. Hype or hoax, the Guardian has asked, though Spinner assumes the band themselves won't be worrying about the fallout just yet.

good luck...keep on at it. As the director of a small label I know how hard it is these days to get bands noticed. It's a huge market..

Hi I know how you feel as we set up our own label to put out the work of our singer/songwriter Laura Jorden www.myspace.com/welcome2lauraland. She has a voice to rival Whitney, Myrah and Susan Boyle, but unless you go on and get savaged by Simon Cowell - its a hard and long road to getting your music played.
Good luck to them and everyone else who is out there, trying to fight the big companies and bring good music to public.

I'm a solo artist myself with a British country album out called 'Saturday Night.' It ain't easy out there to get noticed I can tell you that, people in the industry just seem so scared to touch anything that isn't the norm or goes against the grain of all other genres of music. Good luck to these boys I heard them on Myspace too, their great.

Pure publicity stunt - their demo was passed on to the Grammy voting committee, of who they just happen to be a member of. Fair play, it's a clever marketing ploy but that's all it is.

I don't believe a word of it. This simply doesn't happen. Who heard of the Arctic Monkeys before the mainstream media told everyone they were "discovered" by the joe public on Myspace? Nobody I've ever asked had discovered the AM on Myspace; they only ever heard about them through the mainstream media telling them that they had become big on Myspace. Like that, I suspect this is another piece of creative PR.
