Band of the Week: Two Door Cinema Club

Vampire Weekend must be wondering what's happened. They take a not-exactly-marathon gap to come up with their second album, and a host of bands appear, apparently determined to take their Afro-pop-inspired place.

A few weeks ago, we profiled the really rather infectious Little Comets, whose single 'Adultery' is arguably one of the tunes of the year, and now there's Two Door Cinema Club arriving in sight, off-kilter jangle in tow.

Hailing from Bangor in Northern Ireland, the fresh-faced trio's energetic indie pop adds flashes of African-styled guitar to the template, alongside jangly touch stones such as Death Cab for Cutie and Broken Social Scene. The band - Alex Trimble (drums and vocals), Kevin Baird (bass) and Sam Halliday (guitar) -- have been together since early 2007, giving up on university places after things starting bubbling over on MySpace.

On 'Something Good Can Work' they manage to sound like a tropical-tinged Phoenix. No mistake, this -- Two Door Cinema Club were chosen by the French band to remix one of the songs, 'Lasso,' from their recent album 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix'.

'Cigarettes in the Theatre,' meanwhile has the same energy as early Bloc Party, one which no doubt helped get them signed to indie label Kitsune.

A new single – the clattering, staccato 'I Can Talk' – only hints at the pop gems the band have already delivered. Ezra Koenig and company, you really might need to hurry back.

'I Can Talk' is out on Nov. 23 on Kitsune. The band are on tour now -- details here.
