My Chemical Romance Slam Fame-Hungry Musicians on New Album

After going the concept route -- or at least making a linear work on 'The Black Parade' -- My Chemical Romance are going in another direction on their forthcoming album, due early next year. Spinner visited the group in their L.A. studio to get an early preview and we were left suitably blown away by the nine very disparate songs we got to hear. The tracks ranged from the atmospheric 'Light Before Your Eyes,' a song frontman Gerard Way describes as Pink Floyd-ish, to the '80s-flavored 'Trans Am' and the punk/dance party tune, 'Death Before Disco,' which starts off with a Judas Priest 'Living After Midnight' vibe and turns into a lyrical salute to the Stooges, Velvet Underground and MC5.
Way tells Spinner the as-yet-untitled album is a definite answer to 'The Black Parade.' "Every single record we make is a response to the last," he says. "But sometimes it's not only a response to the last record -- it's a response to the opinion of that record or a response to the world at the time of that record."
What he sees and documents on the new album is a lot of rockers who are in music for the wrong reason. "There's a definite undercurrent of fame versus working class, people having stuff handed to them with zero talent versus working class kids that start a band," he says. "Rock 'n' roll is not red carpets and MySpace friends -- rock 'n' roll is dangerous and rock 'n' roll should piss people off. Right now, there's not a lot of that happening. What it is is a lot of people trying to be famous. That seems to be the goal."
In Way's opinion, that desire to be famous is messing up the sanctity of rock ''n roll. "It's bled into rock. It came from other places, but it's bled into rock 'n' roll and kind of tainted it a bit," Way says. "This record is really a response to that as well."
MCR certainly have the resources and notoriety to bask in that fame as well, so how do they resist that temptation? "Instead of us panicking and trying to see where we can grab the money or grab the opportunity, we just wrote music instead," Way says. "We tried to write a great record; that was our response to things. I think that writing a great record will sell records these days, as opposed to doing every other f---ing thing that people seem to be doing to sell a record."

Okay, so I am quite literally shitting myself with the excitement now. It's driving me mentally insane. It's going to be one fucking kick-ass album.
Plus, I completely agree with Gerard's point of view on rock 'n' roll being "tainted", and there being a load of wannabe-famous guys in bands. If you're not in it for the music, do not be in it at all. People do not like fakes or posers, so don't try acting like you're not. God, I just love MCR. Gerard has such an awesome perspective on things. I love every interview I read.

He's right. Rock aint about fame, it's about stickin' it to the man! Mansions and Ferraris don't get the word out, music and people willing to piss people off do.

Oh my, is our beloved MCR frontman sick of shitty bands?
Seriously though, there are a lot of bands still out there to make decent music and who don't give a shit about fame. A perfect example (that's at the forefront of my mind because I'm going to see them play on Sunday) is Gallows. Other examples, Thursday (yep, still around and touring off the back of their last album), Danzig, Atreyu (possibly stretching the point a bit here but the music's good enough to cover it), Rammstein, In Flames, hell even old bands like Rush and Hawkwind are still around and playing the odd awesome show.
There's good music out there, you just have to find it!

This record sounds like a complete contradiction of what Gerard Way previously endorsed through his other records. Maybe the record will be good, but honestly his attitude towards his last album and this whole idea of 'sanctity' in rock and roll being deprived has made me consider not listening to this album.
It is obvious this man is trying to be someone he is not. I think when a band ridicules their last album they go against every piece of emotion and essence of aesthetic their album had. It's an absolute contradiction! It seems as if there is an inconsitency with what Gerard Way is trying to say, because everything he is vowing against, he is doing. He trying to produce a piece of work to feel popular within himself and the rest of the 'rock n roll' legends.
This guy doesn't even know who he is. He sounds like an absolute clone, rather than an individual. What a waste of time reading this article...and writing this comment!

Maybe I read it wrong, but I don't think he's criticizing The black Parade or being ashamed of it. I agree with Madison when she says that he is probably more ashamed of the so called fans that appeared with the last record. Let's be honest, MCR wasn't the same in the times of Revenge and then in the times of the Black Parade. Somehow people liked the last album more and that turned them into a symbol of popularity and cool, when they actually couldn't care less about being cool cause they have been the uncool kids their whole life. I don't think I agree with you about music reaching more people being the best thing. Music is a universal language but not everybody receive it in the same way. Some young people have listened to MCR and totally got the wrong message, specially this whole emo wave. I've seen on tv a guy with MCR t-shirt showing the cuts in his arms with lots of pride, when actually MCR is completely against self-harm. Do you unbderstand what I mean? And lots of teenagers thought for a while that MCR was the cool music with the hot bandmembers, and this band isn't about that. I think that's what Gerard has grown tired of.
I do see your point, he sounds pretty different, maybe even cold, but he does have a point in what he is saying. Maybe not as the band who is going to save rock and roll, cause that's pure shit, but if they believe that working hard and trying to make a good record is the best thing in order to achieve what they want, I can't do less than support it, cause I do believe too that a rocker isn't a guy who wants to be rich and famous but someone who feels true passion for music.
Hollyat 12-02-2009
oh god just stfu. you're wrong but I'm not wasting my time trying to explain why you're wrong, when you obviously just don't get it anymore.

I think the reason he sounds like he's criticising Black Parade is because that album kind of took on a life of it's own and possibly pushed MCR into the kind of lime light that they never wanted. They probably feel that they need to prove to themselves, and thus others, that they have gained their fame for a substantial reason and that they're not letting it go to their heads. For example, think of a vampiric turtle in a dark room (ok, really weird metaphor but bear with me). Three Cheers (the dark) kind of lead MCR (the turtle) to a false sense of security that they could produce good music without the fame. Black Parade was kind of like the curtain suddenly opening allowing sunlight to flood in. Now, in this album, the turtle has gone 'oh...f***'. They're still trying to keep a close check on their fame and the effect it is having on them, esp. compounded with their previous issues, whilst doing what they enjoy and keeping a loyal fan base. Ok so now picture the vampiric turtle juggling whilst trying to escape the searing sunlight. This will definately be the most difficult album. They need to prepare themselves for bad reviews after having their egos quenched with Black Parade, they don't want any more fame, but they want to make great music. It's a very difficult position to be in, but I think that they've been through so much together that they are more than capable of gaining ground in whatever direction they want to head. Anyway, this is all just speculation and I'm probably totally wrong, but from this interview and snippets I've heard/read the other band members say, I don't think they ever wanted or expected the attention they've received. I do know one thing though; I don't envy them for one second.
