Smashing Pumpkins, 'A Song for a Son' -- Song Premiere

Billy CorganVanguards of '90s alternative rock, the Smashing Pumpkins have continued to carve alternate paths down their road of longstanding commercial success. This new track, 'A Song for a Son,' is the first of 44 that will be rolled out, one at a time, as part of their new album, 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope.' Frontman Billy Corgan says he wrote the song in a flurry of inspiration, composing its basics in just 15 minutes or less.

"It's got something to do about not having any kids and thinking about why I don't have any kids," Corgan tells Spinner. "And then also kind of thinking about my relationship with my father -- there's some kind of connection there, but it's not overt. I didn't set out to write that. It just rolled out of me."

Eventually, all 44 of the new Smashing Pumpkins tracks will be available for free at the band's website. They'll also be splintered and bundled in 11 four-song EPs with elaborate packaging and the works. It's good to see the Pumpkins can still offer an alternative, even in an indie-rock universe. After all, Corgan may be older, but it's not like he's your father or something.

ey, billy. sure you're reading this. fellow highland parker here. longtime fan.

i really like this song, and it was a highlight from the last time i saw you live. your playing on it is awesome and it's well written. my only issue with it (as with the 'zeitgeist' record) is the production.

i really loved 'thefutureembrace' and part of the reason it worked so well for you is because it had your very familiar vocals *produced* in a very familiar way. it lends itself well to effects, doubling, etc - and set back in a certain position of the mix. on this track (and every zeitgeist track), your vocals are really really up front and sound completely untreated, which takes a lot away from an otherwise accessible, bigger sound.

though not as big an issue (or an issue on this track at all), the guitars on the heavier recent songs have also missed *the* smashing pumpkins sound - cut midrange, layers and layers until it gets a machinelike hum ... really created an unmistakable tone for your music.

please experiment with both approaches again on future tracks and see if you can find merit in these adjustments. of course, it's your music, your band, and your decision. but i know you are doing your best to put out something that stands up to your legacy - and i think the only thing stopping you from setting a new standard are a few missteps in the engineering.

    cheers.

Billy keeps on copying all about Robert Smith it seems.
Robert doesnt have any kids, Billy doesnt have any kids,
Robert wrote a song called the boy I never knew, that sings about not having any children. While Billy's songs are great it seems he has always been a shadow of Robert.
Cant say that its a bad thing at all!!
