Liam Maher, the vocalist for '90s band Flowered Up who died in October 2009, overdosed on heroin, according to an inquest into his death. Maher, who was 41, was found dead in his London home by his girlfriend on Oct. 20. Maher had been released from jail 11 days before the overdose, according to the UK's Camden New Journal, and had been planning to go on vacation and subsequently move in with his girlfriend.
A St. Pancras court ruled that the cause of Maher's death was "misuse of drugs." According to a London coroner, Maher was found with "eight times the fatal level of heroin" in his blood, writes the New Journal. It is not believed to have been a suicide attempt.
Maher had reportedly battled drug problems following Flowered Up's 1993 split, but had since cleaned up his act. He signed with the label Poptones in 2001 and was expected to release solo work, but the deal apparently fell through and the music never materialized.
Flowered Up was only together for three years, but during that time saw impressive success in the rave scene with songs like 'It's On' and 'Weekender.' Featured on the cover of magazines like NME, Flowered Up was deemed the "Cockney Happy Mondays" and branded the London equivalent of the dance-infused northern rock scene helmed by bands like the Happy Mondays, the Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets.

"The One,"
You are very ignorant. Drug addiction is a very serious DISEASE that is never cured. It sounds like he had relapsed, something that occurs very often with this DISEASE. You are the loser for being an ignorant moron.

Drug addiction is not a disease. It's a lack of self control and willpower combined with a great deal of stupidity. People know that drugs are illegal and dangerous and choose to do it anyway. That is stupidity, pure and simple. They try to call it a disease to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. "It wasn't my fault, I had a disease". Well this loser just got cured of his "disease".

How uninformed can one be? I have been in recovery for 27 years...Willpower? Weakness? Walk a mile in any addicts shoes and stop being the judgemental pompas assuming person which you are being. Look up alcoholism and addiction in the American Medical Association and you shall see that it is a disease. You sound like you'll look for the source that says it is not...but... choose what you will...believe what you want. Perhaps the poor guy just chose to give up hope. Sh*t happens. Peace and 12 Steps.

Disease? Sure, a self-inflicted one, but try comparing it to something like cancer to someone who has it. You don't do something intentionally to yourself then have the right to say you have a disease. Saying so is a huge slap in the face to someone who actually DOES have a disease.

REALLY? ARE PEOPLE REALLY THIS STUPID? IF YOU KNOW NOTHING, SHUT UP. HOPE YOU NEVER GET A SERIOUS DISEASE, I MEAN "CREATE" A SERIOUS DISEASE!!!! I'M SURE ONE DAY YOU'LL WAKE UP & PRAY YOU HAVE A CANCEROUS TUMOR! STUPIDITY!
hat 1-18-2010
SO IN YOUR OH SO HUMBLE OPINION, DIABETICS DESERVE IT BECAUSE THEY EAT UNHEALTHY & BECAME OVERWEIGHT? PEOPLE THAT PREVIOUSLY SMOKED CIGARETTES DESERVE LUNG CANCER? PEOPLE THAT DONT EAT ORGANIC FRESH FRUIT & CHOOSE TO EAT CHICKEN PUMPED WITH STEROIDS & OTHER CHEMICALS ... THEY DESERVE CANCER TOO?
YOU IGNORANT PEOPLE SOUND SO CLOSE-MINDED & UNEDUCATED. WHAT'S WITH THE HATEFUL PEOPLE? IT'S SICK!

ADDICTION IS NOT A SELF-INFLICTED DISEASE, ASS! THATS JUST A JUDGEMENTAL STONE-AGE OPINION OF SOMEONE WHO LIKELY HAS A LOW LEVEL EDUCATION & OBVIOUSLY HAS ZERO EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE REGARDING ADDICTION.
SOME PEOPLE CAN EXPERIMENT WITH ALL OF THESE VICES THAT OTHERS BECOME ADDICTED TO & BE DONE WITH IT. ADDICTS LIKELY DO DRUGS, DRINK, WHATEVER, BECAUSE THEY HAVE A CHEMICAL INBALANCE & DESPERATELY WANT TO FEEL "NORMAL". THEY KNOW THEIR DIFFERENT THAN OTHERS BUT USUALLY DONT KNOW THE UNDERLYING CONDITIONS UNTIL THEY ARE BEING TREATED FOR ADDICTION.

For every insensitive comment i'm sure one of u has had a relative or friend thats been there b4.Taking drugs is not a disease its the after effect which is addiction. The funny thing is there are so many addictions in this world. So, whats urs???

For all of you who have have no shame in saying good riddence or it's his own fault, consider yourselves incredibly blessed to not have anyone in your life who suffers from addiction. There are SO many reasons that people do drugs and many who don't suffer from addiction and do them all the same. But there ARE a lot of people who do and it has to do with far more than "willpower" or a simple choice not to do it. Addiction is mentally and physically painful and all it takes to relapse is one moment where the addiction overpowers everything else, we all have our weaknesses. Unfortunately for him, his friends, his family and his girlfriend, he used drugs as a means to end his life. I hope he has found the peace he couldn't find here and I hope that those of you who don't recognize how powerful addiction is or how much an addict struggles even being clean for years, that you someday come to understand it. So that instead of being judgmental and hateful you can do something besides spread negativity about something you obviously know so little about and help those who are ultimately less fortunate than you who do suffer from addiction. I hope most that his girlfriend can find a way to heal from such a tragic experience of not only loss but finding him.

HEY MORANS, STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR EVERYTHING, DRUG ADICTION IS AN ADICTION, NOT A DAMN DIEASE.
disease or medical condition is an abnormal condition of an organism that impairs bodily functions, associated with specific symptoms and signs.[1][2][3] It may be caused by external factors, such as infectious disease, or it may be caused by internal dysfunctions, such as autoimmune diseases.
In human beings, "disease" is often used more broadly to refer to any condition that causes pain, dysfunction, distress, social problems, and/or death to the person afflicted, or similar problems for those in contact with the person. In this broader sense, it sometimes includes injuries, disabilities, disorders, syndromes, infections, isolated symptoms, deviant behaviors, and atypical variations of structure and function, while in other contexts and for other purposes these may be considered distinguishable categories.
JUST LIKE SOME IDIOTS BELIEVE THAT BEING JEWISH IS A RACE, IT IS NOT, IT IS A RELIGION.

you are too stupid to bother formulating a reply. crawl back in your hole.

I've never heard of this band or their singer. However, I'm real sorry to hear the person has died. I don't know how one can say that using 8 times the fatal level of heroin is not a suicide.
And I don't know why some posters are so ticked off. Oh and addiction is not a disease. It's a condition that requires some measure of self control to get it under control. I think telling someone they have a disease makes them weaker. They have a core reason for abuse I'm sure. But it's not because a germ or pathogen or little green man in their brain is making them do it. AA is obsolete.

drug addiction and drinking are not diseases, they are choices You can stop with help It's easier to score and buy a bottle Too much excess and too much child hood emotional pain and you have people self medicating instead of seeking professional help

Too many are dying of drug overdoses ! Another one bites the dust.

I watch that show Dr. Drew and all those that are trying to get clean of drugs or drink. My heart goes out to them, in their attempts to come clean. I applaud Heidi Fleiss & Meredith McKensie(sp) and her recent book with coming clean, with what she had to endure. Sadly, the statistics for drug addicts staying clean is very low. I also applaud Farrah Fawcett's son for his attempts in coming clean. Unfortuantely, I see him as being another tragedy as well. I don't understand when many of these Hollywood entertainers strive at keeping their body and face so perfect, but yet reach for drugs or drink or cigs - and how healthy is that for a body.
