Rage Against the Machine, Conor Oberst Announce Arizona Immigration Protest Gig

Rage Against the Machine's Zack de la RochaFor the first time in a decade, Rage Against the Machine will take the stage in Los Angeles to support the ongoing campaign against Arizona's controversial immigration bill, which is set to become a law in just two weeks. The outspoken and politically-charged band will be joined by Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst for the benefit gig, which is set for the Hollywood Palladium on Friday, July 23, according to the L.A. Times.

The special concert will raise money for immigrant activism, with proceeds going to sustain organizations like the Florence Project, which offers legal counsel and social aid to immigrant communities, and the human rights group Puente, Arizona. The show is part of a week of national actions leading up to July 29, the day the bill becomes law, and is expected to raise approximately $300,000 for the cause.

Ticket information is forthcoming and comes on the heels of news last week that Oberst was reuniting his old band, the Desaparecidos, to help fight a similar immigration law in his native Nebraska.

In related news, Rage frontman Zack de la Rocha will perform as One Day as a Lion this week with Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore. The duo's first-ever US gigs are slated for Pomona, Calif. and Los Angeles this Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Passes for those gigs went on sale Wednesday, with ticketholders to be e-mailed venue information at 8AM PT on the morning of those shows. The Locust's keyboardist Joey Karam will accompany the pair, who released an eponymous debut EP in 2008.

Whats the deal with immigration anyway? If people want to come here fine. Do it the legal way. Dont come here illegaly and then expect help for being illegal. Thats wrong.

If they really want to make a stance, they should play this show in Arizona. Making a "big stink" in another state is a cowardly approach.

"Deport all others: Asians, Blacks, Jews, Hispanics, and those mixes mutts"

That has been by the far the most ignorant phrase anyone has said. Learn your history before you open your mouth.

I'm glad RATM is NOT in support of SB1070 because Immigrants are the hardest working people in the planet.

I think everyone should be doing all they can to support the Az. bill. It is about time someone does something to try to put a stop to these people coming here illegally. Go Arizona!!!!!!
