Anais Mitchell, 'Flowers (Eurydice's Song)' -- Video Premiere

    Anais MitchellRighteous Babe

Like so many artists on Righteous Babe records, singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell manages to touch upon all the classic topics -- like sex, drugs ... and numbness -- within the lyrical frame of a single song. Case in point: the new single, 'Flowers (Eurydice's Song),' from Mitchell's latest full-length release, 'Hadestown.'

"I had so much fun making this video," Mitchell tells Spinner about the shoot which took place at Gas Works Park in Seattle. "We were talking about the song and where it came from and I remembered an old verse I had cut out of the song that went, 'What I wanted, I don't know/If I got it, I can't tell/I'm a penny in the water/at the bottom of the well.'

"I think that's where the idea of the pennies came from," she continues. "There's also a thing with the underworld that you have to cross the river Styx to get there and they put coins over your eyes to pay Charon, the boatman, for ferrying you over. I hope I'm remembering that right!"

She's kind of got it right, yeah. Charon is indeed the one who carries souls across the river, for those dearly departed who can afford the fee. Spinner, meanwhile, is pleased to present this video premiere for free -- coins not necessary. Check it out below.
