Despite a line up that boasted media darlings Dum Dum Girls, Wavves, F----- Up and These New Puritans, the glare of attention fell on Bobby Gillespie's much vaunted new garage supergroup, the Silver Machine, at this year's 1234 Festival in Shoreditch, East London on Saturday, July 24.

The Primal Scream singer was joined by bandmates Andrew Innes and Barrie Cadogan on guitar while the rhythm section was fleshed out bySex Pistols' bassist Glen Matlock and erstwhile Oasis/Who drummer Zak Starkey. Though appearing beneath headliners F----- Up, the band drew the largest crowd of the day at the festival's main stage.

Dipping into rock'n'roll's glorious past, the supergroup tore through a cornucopia of 60s garage classics including the Creation's 'How Does it Feel to Feel?,' the Count Five's 'Psychotic Reaction' and a devastating run through the MC5's 'Sister Anne' that left the audience hoping that the band may survive beyond the remit of a one-off gig.

Also drawing a sizeable crowd was former Joy Division bassist Peter Hook who recreated the band's 30-year-old classic, 'Unknown Pleasures.' Augmented by his current band, the Light, and joined by one-time Happy Mondays backing singer Rowetta, the performance proved to be more enjoyable than originally anticipated thanks largely to a collection songs so poignant that they're destined to live forever.
